Volunteering This Thanksgiving in NYC

Posted on Oct 18, 2016

“Voluntourism” combines traditional travel and tourism with volunteer work.  Thanksgiving in NYC is an ideal destination to enjoy the magic of New York’s Holiday Season with time to give back to those in need.

There is still time to book a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday and watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade from a variety of vantage points based upon your budget.  Add a Broadway Show, the Christmas Spectacular and take in the sites and museums.  Enjoy the holiday windows, multiple Christmas Trees, marvel at the competitive nature of neighbors out-decorating each other in Brooklyn, and dine in wonderful restaurants showcasing a variety of cuisines. Combine all that magic with helping someone else.

The following organizations encourage one day participation and appreciate signups in advance:

 New York Cares

If you’re new to holiday volunteering and want a place to start, New York Cares provides a directory of things you could do on Thanksgiving Day. Whether helping serve the traditional holiday meal or collecting coats for children who don’t have them, an extra volunteer is always useful.

 The Bowery Mission

The Bowery Mission serves over 10,000 meals to the homeless on Thanksgiving Day. Interested holiday volunteers are asked to visit the group’s website on Nov. 1 to register.

 DOROT’s Thanksgiving Meal Delivery

A charity that focuses specifically on helping the elderly, DOROT will be delivering homemade meals to seniors all over the city on Thanksgiving. The organization is planning a Thanksgiving celebration on Nov. 20, as well as Chanukah volunteering on Dec. 25, 28 and 29.

 FeedingNYC

Started as a door-to-door charity 15 years ago, FeedingNYC is now a multi-faith organization that delivers thousands of dinners every year. This November, donate non-perishable food items or sign up to volunteer on Thanksgiving Day.

 Masbia

The Kosher soup kitchen, which has three locations in Queens and Brooklyn, brings hot meals to those in need year-round and also hosts Thanksgiving dinner. Its volunteers are needed to prep food and serve patrons.
