Combine Dazzling Jewels by JAR at the Metropolitan Museum of Art with Discover New York and Beyond’s Insider Access Experience to the Diamond District

Fine tune your eye to the fabulous craftsmanship of jewels by Joel A. Rosenthal, who has worked for more than thirty-five years in Paris under the name JAR. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is showcasing the first retrospective of his work in America. The breathtaking exhibition includes more than four hundred one-of-a-kind masterworks by this influential designer. The exhibition opens tomorrow, Wednesday, November 20 and runs through March 9, 2014.

Rosenthal, born in New York and educated at Harvard University, moved shortly after graduation to Paris. Within a few years his passion for making jewelry surpassed his other ventures, and he opened a small, almost hidden shop on the Place Vendôme where he could show his work. He quickly became well known for his sculptural designs in vibrant colors: wild rose and weeping-willow earrings; raspberry, asparagus, and leek brooches; soft-as-fabric handkerchief earrings; an ocean wave; a diamond-bridled zebra. He uses traditional as well as non-traditional materials: aluminum, titanium, steel, wood, silver darkened by chemical processes, even beetle wings. Whether the jewels are small or large, natural or geometric, wild in color or quietly shaded, each work is a singular expression of JAR’s unique creative spirit.
