A 24-hour Birthday celebration at the Mandarin Oriental, New York

Posted on Oct 3, 2011

Make the most of getting away without ever going away!

Celebrating my birthday meant a getaway without going away.  My goal was to spend 24 hours in  one location with a variety of restful and fun activities:  Spa, good food and great music combined with iconic  views of New York in a luxury environment. The choice was easy; the Mandarin Oriental, New York met all of the criteria.

My day started at 10:00 AM with an 80 minute massage in the Mandarin’s beautiful Thai decorated treatment room, followed by a 60 minute facial. The spa is a destination in itself and provides sheer relaxation  including custom made herbal teas as a welcome.

Saturday Brunch was in the Mandarin Oriental’s restaurant, Asiate overlooking Columbus Circle with views of Central Park.  Their brunch menu is pre-fix at $58 per person and includes a starter with a selection of small appetizers so that you sample different dishes in one course. The entrée allows you to choose two  dishes, followed by a pair of desserts! This menu is really designed for the person that loves the idea of a  buffet’s selection, yet wants to be served, or just cannot decide between two items.  You get the best of both.

My Executive Suite’s configuration was just like a one-bedroom apartment in the sky, minus the kitchen.  Since few New Yorker’s really cook, most could easily live in a hotel.  The views are gorgeous from the  Hudson River down to the Statue of Liberty and across to the north and a peak at Central Park.  There were several cruise ships docked on the West Side and it’s nice to see that New York is such a great port.

The chef had created a very “sweet” touch for a welcome amenity. Let us know what you are celebrating so that we can add the special touches to your reservation.

After a little relaxation in the Suite, it was time to explore the shops at Columbus Circle.  Included  in the room rates offered by Discover New York, are cocktails and hors d’oeuvres once during your stay in the Mo-Bar on the 35th floor.  The selections are terrific and you can actually use this for dinner!

The choices for live music are amazing within a 10 minute walk from the Mandarin Oriental, New York and include: Broadway Musicals, The Metropolitan Opera, The New York Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center in the Rose Room and Dizzy’s Coca Cola right in AOL Time Warner’s  complex.    However, since the goal was to stay in the complex, a fabulous concert at the Frederick P Rose Center listening to Cassandra Wilson was the perfect fit. This beautiful theatre is located on the fifth floor and extremely convenient.

An after dinner drink in the lounge on the hotel’s 35th floor was a relaxing way to end the evening.  The lounge is very comfortable with views overlooking Columbus Circle and the twinkling lights of the city. You can have the same hors d’oeuvre menu in the lounge if you would rather be there.

The next morning was a total splurge with room service delivering whole wheat pancakes and berries, freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice and black coffee within 20 minutes! It was heaven to dine in the sky and just enjoy seeing the views and clear blue sky!
