War Paint is a musical based both on Lindy Woodhead’s 2004 book War Paint and on the 2007 documentary film The Powder & the Glory by Ann Carol Grossman and Arnie Reisman.
Patti La Pone plays Helena Rubinstein, born in Krakow, Poland, who moved to Australia and opened her cosmetics company. She moved to New York City in 1915 at the outbreak of World War I in 1915 and became one of the richest women in the world.
Christine Ebersol play Florence Nightingale Graham, and by using the name Elizabeth Arden, she built a U.S. cosmetics empire, Elizabeth Arden, Inc. By 1929 she owned 150 upscale salons across the United States and Europe. Her line of 1000 products were found in the luxury market 22 countries. She was the sole owner, and at the peak of her career, she was one of the wealthiest women in the world.
War Paint tells the story of these two remarkable women, and how they built their businesses, the 50-year competition between them and their sacrifices to become the country’s first major female entrepreneurs.
