| Kitt's Footnote:
A trip to Florence was definitely the highlight of September for me. Through the Friends of Florence, our three day program began
with a welcome session and overview of the program followed by a private tour of the Bargello Museum and dinner in the courtyard with dancers in period
costumes.
The program continued over the next days with a private tour of the Bapistry of Florence and the Cathedral with Monsignor
Timothy Verdon, one of the world’s leading experts about both locations. Lunch at a fabulous private Villa, a visit to the Orsanmichele and dinner in Villa Del
Collazzi on a hillside.
The following day we were off to Carrara to go inside the mountain to see where the marble had come from to create The David.
Lunch was hosted in another private villa and we were able to experience how marble is carved by actually taking a chisel and trying it for ourselves. After a private
visit to the Medici Tombs in Florence we viewed Michelangelo's drawings in the underground vaults with our wonderful art historians. Dinner that evening was in the
Palazzo Frescobaldi.
The next morning we departed for a private visit of the Uffizi Gallery and had coffee on the Uffizi Terrace. It was a pleasure to
experience this since the museum was closed to the public. The Marchese Piero Antinori hosted a wine tasting and lunch at her estate. Dinner that evening was
simply amazing. We entered the Galleria dell’Accademia to see a small presentation about the restoration of The David, since the funds for the restoration
had been donated by the Friends of Florence. There, in a long gallery was one table set for 94 people and at the end, gleaming in beautiful white marble stood the
restored David. Now, that’s a wow!
We stayed at the Gallery Hotel Art in Florence which is owned by the Ferragamo family. The location is absolutely perfect and the
staff could not have been nicer. For those of you who love to sit under the stars in the evening, feel free to book one of the fabulous Penthouse Suites with the very
generous terrace to host about 20 of your friends.
My time in Rome was only one evening, but it was at the Hotel Hassler Roma, at the top of the Spanish Steps. It’s a
beautiful property with a dining room that allows for expansive views over the rooftops of Rome.
We had a marvelous time visiting a perfumer who will create a fragrance specifically for you, a private visit to the Knights of Malta
and a special visit to the catacombs of St. Peter’s to see the bones that are thought be those of St. Peter. It was off to the airport for my return home. What
an amazing behind the scenes event!
Denver holds so many good and fun restaurants. This month, I returned to The Brown Palace. Everyone there is very nice. The
rooms hold tradition mixed with wonderful new beds and down comforters. They even put a coffee pot and coffee in my room when I checked in.
Le Fondue is owned by the people who run Gallagher’s next door and so the quality of the steak is wonderful. The service
is genuine and the people there obviously enjoy making the cheese fondue from scratch at your table. Although they serve four different types of cheese fondue, I still
prefer the original.
