7th Annual Holiday Train Show, New York Transit Museum Gallery Annex and Store at Grand Central Terminal This year’s annual Holiday Train Show will feature a working “Ogauge” train layout with Lionel trains running on eight separate loops of track through a 34-foot long miniature New York City scene. Vintage trains from the Museum’s collection, made by Lionel, American Flyer and Louis Marx & Company, will also be on display.

ING New York City Marathon, Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan. 212-423-2249. The premier event of New York Road Runners, the ING New York City Marathon is one of the world's great road races, drawing more than 100,000 applicants. The race attracts many world-class professional athletes, not only for the more than $600,000 in prize money, but also for the chance to excel in the media capital of the world before two million cheering spectators and 315 million worldwide television viewers. As any one of the more than 700,000 past participants will attest, crossing the finish line in Central Park is one of the great thrills of a lifetime. Start time 9:00 AM in Staten Island on the Verrazano Bridge and ends near Tavern on the Green in Central Park.

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, One Intrepid Square, 12th Avenue at 46th Street, opens. After a two year leave for restoration and renovation, the Intrepid Museum Complex now boasts new exhibits, interactive elements, newly opened areas of the ship and a completely restored aircraft collection, all alongside the former USS Growler submarine and British Airways Concorde.

New York Neighborhoods/Preservation and Development: Is the South Street Seaport History? Museum of the City of New York, 1220 Fifth Avenue At 103rd Street, 212-534-1672 at 6:30 PM. A new proposal by General Growth Properties calls for demolishing the existing structures on Pier 17 to construct an elaborate mixed-use development, including a 42-story hotel and apartment tower. Will the new development revitalize the Seaport or compromise the character of this historic site? Kent Barwick, President of the Municipal Art Society; Michael McNaughton, Vice President of Asset Management, Northeast, GGP; Julie Menin, Chair of CB 1, Manhattan; Frank Sciame, Board Chair at the Seaport Museum; and Madelyn Wils, Executive Vice President for Planning and Development at the NYC Economic Development Corporation will discuss the future of the Seaport district in a program introduced by architect James Sanders, the curator and designer of a new exhibition about the Seaport's history and development.

Children will learn about the birth of Seventh Avenue as the center of New York's fashion industry in the exhibition Paris/New York: Design Fashion Culture 1925-1940. After touring the exhibition, participants can design ready-to-wear styles and make them come to life on their own couture paper dolls. FREE with Museum admission!

Liberals, Conservatives, and Radicals in Catholic New York Museum of the City of New York, 1220 Fifth Avenue At 103rd Street, 212-534-1672 at 6:30 PM. The tensions within New York's vast Catholic community profoundly shaped the city's politics, labor movement, and intellectual discourse during the New Deal, the Cold War, and beyond. Alan Brinkley, Provost of Columbia University, will discuss such legendary figures as Dorothy Day of the Catholic Worker Movement; Michael J. Quill of the Transport Workers Union; Patrick Scanlan, anti-communist editor of the Brooklyn Tablet; and New York's Jesuit labor priests with James T. Fisher, Professor of Theology, Fordham University; Joshua B. Freeman, Professor of History, CUNY Graduate Center; and Patrick McNamara, Assistant Archivist, Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn. Canstruction. World Financial Center Gallery & Winter Garden. Canstruction.com. This is one of my favorite annual exhibits in New York. Click on canstruction.com to see the list of all the cities that host this event. Each year a variety of architects and design firms submit sculptures made entirely from cans. Bring your camera and your children and grandchildren. It’s almost unbelievable how creative these pieces are and the money raised goes to feed the homeless.

The Holiday Train Show, New York Botanical Garden, Bronx River Parkway at Fordham Road Bronx, 718-817-8700. This is one of my favorite things to do during the holiday season. Highlights of the show are: steam engines and streetcars, whimsical ladybugs and modern freight trains travel under waterfalls, around mountains, and through tunnels. The annual favorites include models of structures all made from natural vegetation and include: The Empire State Building, Little Red Lighthouse, Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty, Yankee Stadium, and new this year: Rose Center for Earth and Space, home of the famous Hayden Planetarium, Hendrick Loft House in Brooklyn, Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater in Central Park, the Old Stone House in Brooklyn and the Merchant’s House Museum. Runs through Sunday, January 11, 2009. Hours vary so call ahead. Generally, it is from 10:00 AM 6:00 PM with extended hour till 7:00 PM on certain nights. Closed Mondays, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Thanksgiving Day Balloons, 77th 81st Street and Central Park West from 3:00 PM 10:00 PM. Watch the balloons being blown up for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. This event is extremely crowded so beware.
