J. M. W. Turner, opens at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue at 82nd Street, 212-879-5500. Having once lashed himself to a ship’s mast during a storm to get a better look at his source material, J.M.W. Turner created moody seascapes and landscapes suffused with luminosity. The paintings, which are said to have served as precursors to Impressionism and abstract painting, will be on view as part of the Met’s 140-piece retrospective, the first in the U.S. in more than 40 years.
The New York City Waterfalls, Public Art Fund and the City of New York, Four sites including: the Brooklyn Bridge, between Piers 4 and 5, Pier 35, and Governors Island, 212-370-1319. Commissioned by the Public Art Fund, the project consists of four monumental, man-made waterfalls. These 90- to 120-foot tall installations will operate from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM, seven days a week, and will be lit after sunset. This major work of temporary public art was created by acclaimed artist Olafur Eliasson. Runs through Wednesday, October 15.
Hayden Planetarium Program: Virtual Universe: Things That Go Bang, American Museum of Natural History, Central Park West at 79th Street, 212-769-5100. Fee: $15 The Hayden Planetarium has assembled the world’s largest cosmic atlas, extending from Earth to the greatest distances yet charted by astronomers. On the first Tuesday of each month, visitors are invited to a fully interactive tour of the universe that surrounds usthe longest trip one can take while staying in New York!

Lincoln Center Festival 2008, Lincoln Center, 212-721-6500. This summer, the Lincoln Center Festival returns for its 13th season, hosting a diverse assortment of ethnic arts events, including opera, poetry, dance, and music. From July 2 to July 27, artists from all around the world will be in New York performing such works as Die Soldaten, The Bacchae, and Impressing The Czar, as well as concerts by others. 2008 Macy's 4th of July Fireworks, The 32nd Annual Macy's 4th of July Fireworks® America's Biggest Independence Day Pyrotechnic Display Celebrates our Nation Through the Rhythm and Magic of Dance. Macy's Fireworks will be launched from two locations in New York City, the East River between 10th and 24th Streets and the South Street Seaport with 35,000 fireworks. Show will feature special moment dedicated to Macy's 150th Anniversary.
