I didn't know you did that!

In addition to creating wonderful experiences for Board of Directors meetings and affinity groups, we also created some wonderful memories for the individual traveler!

Mission: This past spring our challenge was to have a nervous mother feel comfortable about her daughter moving to New York to become an actress. This was a fun assignment.

The mother arrived into New York 3 days prior to her daughter’s arrival. She took our Navigating NY Like a Native program for a general orientation of each neighborhood followed by a private City Highlights Tour of the city. The following day we looked at corporate short-term apartments to give her daughter an option for a short-term experience of only a few months before “giving up”.. The next day, we looked at furnished and unfurnished apartments in case a minimum of a year’s rental looked more logical.

The following day the daughter arrived with her childhood friend who would share the apartment with her. Same program, Navigating NY Like a Native for the girls, followed by a private City Highlights Tour. The next day we explored the choices of apartments that were on the market. This allowed both of the girls to begin to feel very comfortable with their soon to be new surroundings. The excitement of moving to New York after graduation from college was at a high for everyone, and the mother felt comfortable!

This fall, after finding the apartment, our design team headed by Eric Cohler, drew up the floor plans to scale. After approval from both mother and daughter and roommate, it was off to find the perfect furniture and outfit the apartment. At the end of the week, the girls moved in and loved the space! The mother was just thrilled and so were the girls.

Mission: After the Yankees won the playoffs, we received a call from an agent at 3:00 PM on Friday. She explained that her client was boarding a plane from Rochester in an hour and a half to visit his girlfriend who lived in NY. He wanted to take her to the World Series at Yankee Stadium the following day but only in a specific section of the stadium. What could we do for her? We had those tickets with a personal note from us saying on behalf of his agent and agency it was a pleasure for us to provide the tickets for him. Should he wish any additional services while he was in NY to please call our cell phone. The packet arrived at his girlfriends’ apartment at 7:00 PM!

What do you need to accomplish for your associates and clients that make sense for us to package for you?

Mission: A client was sitting in a hotel room with her small children. The hotel had no microwave to heat the baby bottles. The agent called us for help. We had a new microwave sitting in their hotel room within 45 minutes!

We wish each of you a special holiday season filled with love and laughter. We are finishing our 10th year of helping people smile as they come into New York and leave because they have learned something new. Doing the same thing year in and year out is fun. However, exploring the city in a new way can be even more fun!

It is always amazing to us how many of you love to read this newsletter but have yet to click on the web site. That’s where all of the fun programs are located and they will help you continue to learn more about New York.

Tipping is a way of life in New York. We have divided our tipping suggestions it into two sections. The first section will help you if you are visiting. The second will help your children who have moved here.

At Christmas, tenants and owners of buildings are presented with a list of employees and how many years they have worked in the building. It is a way for each person to write a note and say thank you for the help during the past year. For those of you with children who have moved to New York this year, here is a guide to help you under the section below called Residents. When you are done reading this, it will be obvious that a check from you would be greatly appreciated so that they can spread the joy further!

Tourists:

  • Taxi drivers: 15-20% or round up. If the fare is $3.40, feel comfortable with giving $4.00.
  • Doormen at hotels: if they open the door you do not need to tip. If they hail a taxi, a dollar is appreciated.
  • Rest room attendants: $1.00 per person is average.
  • Bellman: $1.00- $2:00 per bag.
  • Hotel maids: $2.00-$5.00 per day depending upon the hotel.
  • Concierge: $5.00 per request depending upon what requests have been made. Feel free to add more if you are asking for a very difficult restaurant reservation. If you do find yourself lucky enough to obtain it, please do take advantage of it. By not canceling or not showing for a reservation, it reflects on the person making the booking.. We made a reservation for 13 people and the person in charge decided one- hour prior that he felt like going somewhere else. We believe that this is beyond bad manners it is truly thoughtless on his part. The hospitality industry tries to accommodate reservations and be able to pay their staff, especially during very busy times by accepting a booking.

Residents:

  • Dog Walkers: 1-week salary
  • Doormen: $50.00 each shift
  • Floormen: $50.00 each shift
  • Elevator operators: $50.00 each shift
