This has been an amazing month of travel to include both a two week vacation and then sales calls.
Europe: My excursion on the Viking River Cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam was a delightful ‘buffet” of cities. I know that I would love to return to Vienna and spend more time there. One day is simply like trying to do NYC in a week! The itinerary is wonderful with one shore excursion per day built into the cost of the cruise. The pace allowed a half day escorted tour and the balance of the time free to explore on your own. Bring euros for tipping the guides since that is not included.
This cruise is perfect for anyone over 55 who has two weeks to spend and knows a lot about European history on their own. There is no on board lecturer to provide background history, so if this is important to you, bone up ahead of time on your reading. The guides at each city will provide a basic tour, so you can get the flavor of each city along the way. The pink and red geraniums in window boxes were everywhere, providing a colorful touch to our excursions.
Remember to bring hair conditioner, a bathrobe and eye shades in case you can’t sleep with the sun shining into the cabins in the morning. The sun rose very early and there are no blackout shades on the windows.
There is no room service, but coffee, tea and pastries are available for the early birds who wake prior to breakfast at 7:00 am. Food is basic, so fussy eaters should not have a challenge finding something on the menu. The corkage fee on board is more than the cost of the local wines, so you can stay with the selections of house carafe’s of red or white unless you want something very special.
June is a time of anniversaries and we had our fair share on board. The crew did a wonderful job of presenting cakes with sparklers on top to each couple celebrating along the trip. Many couples were celebrating their 43rd, 48th and even 58th anniversaries. All of these couples have kept their sense of humor, and that just might be the trick to staying together. The nightlife on board is Peter at the electric piano and 3,000 song titles in his head. The cruise director will provide some interesting quizzes for the passengers, so this is a low-key group.
Miami was very hot for our MPI conference. There were some excellent seminars and fun networking catching up with friends.
Chicago was delightful, although hot. I did have time to pop into the Art Institute which is fabulous. The miniature rooms, paper weights and Toulouse-Lautrec exhibits were really terrific.
Montreal has a mountain, something I did not get to see until this trip thanks to a personal tour by Sam Pelc. The views from the top are amazing. There are so many quaint areas for charming dinners, I can’t wait to return.
If you have time to see the Cézanne & Pissarro exhibit at MoMA on view through September 12th and the Matisse: The Fabric of Dreams His Art and his Textiles exhibit at The Met through September 25th. Please call us if you wish to have your tickets in your welcome packet at the hotel upon arrival rather than waiting in line at the museums.
