Kitt's Picks: Theater
Ratings are from 1-5 logos with Kitt's favorites receiving 5.
A Catered Affair
Faith Prince, Tom Wopat and Harvey Fierstein are great in what can be termed a "chick flick" arrives on Broadway. This production moves from musical to drama and back. The music is less than memorable. Harvey Fierstein is such an amazing talent and his own script leaves us wanting more from his portrayal of Uncle Winston. Leslie Kritzer and Matt Cavenaugh are both good as the young couple in love trying to have the quiet, family wedding of their dreams and fight their parents' wishes to change to A Catered Affair. Think this is a nice ladies night out production or for couples about to go through the experience of watching their offspring get married and review their own marriages.
A Tale of Two Cities
This production is on a grand scale with Les Miserables with a huge cast, memorable songs and a great story. Jill Santoriello wrote the book, music and lyrics. Granted, I saw it in previews and perhaps editing will tighten the production so it has room to become better. James Barbour plays Sydney Carton and worth the ticket price.
Altar Boyz
Very clever production. This is a musical that takes some smart twists and turns and it explores the concept of faith. The cast is perfect, very high energy as it portrays a Christian pop group of five Teen People. Great for teens and parents. After hearing from friends how much they loved it, I had to go and yes, I loved it.
August: Osage County
This is endless screaming from a dysfunctional family. You might as well turn on Jerry Springer and listen for free. You’re exhausted after the second act although it got a great review from Ben Brantley.
Avenue Q
This is X rated, adults only, no matter how sophisticated you think that your children are; you and the audience will not be comfortable with under 18 year olds
Boeing-Boeing
This is a non-stop laugh from start to finish. A truly enjoyable evening in the theater and a delight for anyone that loves well written comedy. The casting director should receive a Tony for finding the perfect actors for this production!
Chicago
A great musical for adults. Ann Reinking's choreography in the style of Bob Fosse is wonderful. The songs have become classics and the show is just as strong now as it was 10 years ago.
Flamingo Court
This is an interesting set of three vignettes about the passage of aging. What's it like to live in Florida in your 70's? This might appeal to snow birds who migrate south each winter until they finally reside permanently in the Sunshine State.
Performances by Jamie Farr and Anita Gillette are wonderful as they take on all three leading characters in each part of the production. Supporting roles with Lucy Martin and Herbert Rubens round out the production.
Gazillion Fan Yang Bubble Show
This is the perfect show for a family with small children. It's a wonderful combination of fantasy and science and incredible talent. Fan Yang holds 12 world records in the Guinness Book of World Records for his creativity with bubbles. At one hour and 15 minutes, it's a great show for even very young children.
Gypsy
Simply fabulous describes this revival of Gypsy. The three leads deserved their Tony awards: Patti LuPone's performance as Rose, Boyd Gaines as Herbie and Laura Benanti as Louise. This production will be remembered for a long time as very special as classic Broadway.
Hairspray
Great Fun, although the topic of interracial high school students might be a challenge for some.
In the Heights
Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda when he was in high school, and re-written in college, this look at immigration into the United States from the Latin American Countries will touch the hearts of the Latino community. The Lyrics are backed by repetitive Latin beats, but tell the story of life in Washington Heights, a tight knit zip code in the northern tip of Manhattan. For groups that speak Spanish, this is a great production by a talented cast.
Jersey Boys
The tale of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons will bring back great memories from the 60's. Be prepared for another overly mic'd production and Soprano's language.
Jump
Cute Off-Broadway Production for the teen set that loves the martial arts. It's more stage combat than you need or want.
Legally Blonde
What Spamalot has done for boys and men to enjoy a fun experience on Broadway, Legally Blonde will do for girls 8 - 18! Bailey Hanks has replaced Laura Bell Bundy. This is a very high energy show with loud music, so be ready. However, the story line allowing women to be smart and beautiful is timeless and a good role model for young girls.
Mamma Mia
Big and bright musical about a woman who can’t determine which of three men might have been the father of her daughter.
Mary Poppins The New Musical
Just loved this production from beginning to end. The set design by Bob Crowley and lighting by Howard Harrison are fabulous. George Stiles and Stephen Mear's choreography are wonderful. As with many productions that have been adapted from a movie or book onto the Broadway stage, you might be a tad disappointed but it's good, clean family entertainment.
Spamalot
Having never seen the movie, I was not sure that I was going to even like this. However, from the very first scene, it was sheer delight until the final curtain call! This is an incredibly clever production, with a wonderful cast, and perfect for the family with teenagers. The costumes, set design and lighting make this the new Producers and it will be around for years.
Spring Awakening
Thought provoking, haunting actually. This is definitely not for children under 18, although if you ask a teen, they'd feel that they were ready to see this at 15. Explicit carnal knowledge will determine which group is comfortable exploring the world of the 1890's Victorian approach to the world of changing bodies and feelings. Viewing the careless pre-teens as they learn about themselves and their relationships with the opposite sex is beautifully executed by the cast in this musical. Written over 120 years ago, parents of pre-teens and teens will find this well worth seeing to help them become better parents.
Stomp
Perfect for the whole family, especially international groups where language is not an issue since the production is entirely percussion based.
The Country Girl
Despite Clifford Odets interesting play about relationships and great star performances by Morgan Freeman, Frances McDormand and Peter Gallagheher, this production drags through the first act. Tim Hatley's scenic design adds to this challenge by closing the curtains between scenes rather than seamlessly changing the sets while the audience can watch.
The Lion King
Still attracts audiences of all ages but can’t hold a candle to Beauty and the Beast as far as I am concerned.
The Little Mermaid
Most Broadway shows allow children 4 and over entrance. This production allows children of any age to enjoy the show as long as they have purchased a ticket...and the amount of strollers is staggering bringing tiny tots to experience the magic of Broadway.
The costumes by Tatiana Noginova, set design by George Tsypin and lighting by Natasha Katz are breath taking--bigger than life, over the top stunning.
This is a great production for girls from tiny tots to grandmothers. It's the ultimate story book romance turned into a pop up book. Include this WOW show in your holiday line up of must see shows.
The Phantom of the Opera
A classic after all these years and if you have seen the hot new shows, maybe it is time to see this one again.
Wicked
One of the hottest tickets in town now, it is perfect for an audience that grew up with the Wizard of Oz and will see the humor in the twists that the story line takes. The production is extremely loud and long at 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Xanadu
Beyond Kitsch and Camp, this strange take-off on Greek mythology has a talented cast. Great for those of you who love over the top costumes, disco 80's music and a fun sense of humor will get a kick out of this. Perfect for Bachelorette parties and those of you who have been to Lucky Cheng's and Lips.
Young Frankenstein
Everything a Broadway musical should be: great sets, music, lighting, costumes, casting. A truly joyous evening of first class entertainment for the whole family.
[title of show]
Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell have created an insider's look at creating a Broadway show within a Broadway show. It's clever, but crass. The talents of Susan Blackwell and Heidi Blickenstaff add a lot. This is best left to avid theater afficinados who can appreciate the inside jokes.
